Hockey Face Off
When Po Wan moved to Canada in 1975, it brought whole new experiences to paint. One such new experience was hockey, a classic Canadian game. Ng tried to capture the cold, the speed of the game and the excitement from the crowd. The colours are a mix of whites but with his short brushstrokes we get a feel for the movement and intensity involved in the game. We can see that the crowd, though a blur in the background, fill the arena. He has once again used the Chinese convention of a black outline on the main hockey players. In this painting, he uses the outline to bring certain players to the foreground, creating a 3D space.
